Vegetarian Diets Are Not Necessarily “Healthy”

I’m concerned.

People think “vegetarianism” is the absolute healthiest diet out there. Vegetarians swear off meats and any foods that originate or derive from meat products (milk, eggs, cheese, etc), but what people don’t know is that the body actually needs meat or at least its protein properties in order to meet the body’s recommended levels of protein to function.

According to newtreatments.org, “a healthy diet may be possible, but must be entirely raw”. What do they mean by this? Well, they go on to explain that  ”You can’t eat grains or beans raw, so these are excluded from the diet immediately. Instead you will need to eat more fats: Raw butter and cream are the best. ” Basically, cooking (heat) breaks down nutritional/protein properties so it does not allow for the same nutrients as raw food.

I think it’s important to list some things people should consider before attempting an all out vegetarian diet, kind of like a pro and con list. Tons of research must go into the decision Continue reading

Livestrong: Go to source for all things health-related

I recently discovered Livestong.com when I was looking up information on  if losing a certain amount of weight (ok fine I’ll just tell you,  50 pounds) in about 6 months was possible and/or a health risk. The information I received was not only helpful, but extremely practical and realistic.

Livestrong

All their information is backed up by scientific evidence and/or from credible sources like the National Academy of Sports Medicine (for fitness related information) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (for weight loss related information).

My favorite thing about Livestrong.com, is the practical advice it gives readers. For example, when I searched “50 pounds in 6 months” I was instead given a “50 pounds in 7 months” result because anything less than 7 months would require a person to lose more than 2 pounds a week and that, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is considered unhealthy and would require you to be medically monitored.

They provide “Tips” and “Steps” in short concise points to make it easy for the reader to understand and do not use jargon that may confuse or turn-off a reader. Another thing I like about Livestrong.com is that its articles do not just talk about health, fitness, and weight loss, but also have articles on relationship advice, “how-to” tutorials, recipes, and (winner of the most random topic award) “Rules for Grandparents When Babysitting”.

The site is versatile enough to appeal to anyone with a health related question, seeking relationship advice, weight loss inquiries, and with grandchildren :P
